So I'm leaving New York for San Francisco the day after tomorrow.
I really am having a great time. I have met so many great people over the last 5 days and I really wish my trip was longer. I told my friend today that if I had the funds that I would stay here a lot longer. Everything here is great.
People have told me that New Yorkers are some of the meanest people. I didn't really experience any of that until today. While walking down 5th Avenue from Central Park, I bunch of African-American guys approached me and my friend. They were trying to get us to buy their CD and I said, "No, thank you." as I continued to walk. I heard one of them say, "Those damn Chinese people. They never support black people!" And a bunch of profanity was thrown in there as well.
WOW. That was amazing...in a bad way. I told my friend that that was the meanest thing anyone has ever said to me...including all my experiences in San Francisco.
It was ironic how this all happened down the block from the Philippine consulate. We're Filipino dammit - NOT CHINESE. I love my Chinese folks, but I don't like getting called something that I am not. I was about to throw up the "Westside" hand gesture and yell back that I listen to Tupac and E-40 and not to their amatuer sh!t, but I didn't want to get jumped, shot, who knows what else they would do. HAHA. After I heard the guy say what he said, I looked back at him and gave him a long mean look. =)
*sigh*
No one has EVER said anything racist to me before...and for the first time it was in New York. I'm just kind of happy it didn't happen in my city.
=(
